Scotland Winter Retreat 2027
Why January is the Best Time to Go
January can be a hard month. It's dark, it's long, and by the third weekend most of us are running on empty.
We've put something good right in the middle of it.
Two nights at Netherbyres House in the Scottish Borders — a barrel sauna, a morning dip in Eyemouth harbour, candlelit yoga, long dinners, and nowhere you need to be.
Scotland in January sounds like a hard sell, we know. But this house has a way of changing people's minds pretty quickly.

There's a particular kind of rest that only happens in winter
Katherine May wrote about this in Wintering — the idea that winter isn't something to push through, but something to move with. That rest isn't a reward for productivity. That slowing down isn't giving up.
We think about that a lot when we plan these retreats.
The place
Netherbyres is a grand Victorian mansion on the edge of Eyemouth, right on the Borders coastline. Bold colours, eclectic interiors, every room decorated differently. It's exclusively ours for the weekend. It really is a special place.
Most people arrive, put their bags down, look around, and say some version of: oh wow.
There's a barrel sauna in the garden. The coast is a short drive away. And the lounge and bar area is the kind of room you walk into and immediately don't want to leave.
What a day actually looks like
You start with an optional sea dip at Eyemouth harbour. Yes, it's chilly. It's also the best way to start a day in January. There's hot coffee waiting when you come out.
Then back to the house for gentle morning yoga — slow, warming, candlelit. You don't need a practice to do it. You just need to show up.
A long brunch. Then the afternoon is yours. Wrap up and wander through the gardens. Curl up somewhere with a book. Sit in the sauna. Do nothing at all, which is also very much encouraged.
In the evenings the house comes into its own. Restorative yoga by candlelight, a long dinner around the big table in the dining room, cocktails in the lounge afterwards.
Nothing is compulsory. You won't be expected to share anything, fix anything, or be anywhere you don't want to be.
Who it's for
This retreat is for you if January feels long and you'd like something to look forward to. If you're the one who makes everything happen for everyone else. If every year you tell yourself you'll plan something just for you, and every year the diary fills up before you get the chance.
You don't need to be good at yoga. You don't need to have been on retreat before. Come on your own, with a friend, with a partner. Absolute beginners very much included.
"This retreat was exactly what I didn't realise I needed. From the moment I arrived, everything felt intentional — the atmosphere, the yoga practices, the community, and the balance between activity and rest." — Bita
The food
No planning. No prepping. No washing up.
Our chef cooks everything from scratch — hearty dinners, long brunches, good things to snack on in between. Made with care, using local seasonal produce. We eat together, slowly, around the table.
The kind of meals that fill the whole house with the best kind of smell.
What people tell us afterwards
I didn't realise how much I needed that. I feel lighter. My head feels clearer. I've slept properly for the first time in ages. I forgot what it felt like not to be rushing. I feel more like myself again.

A few questions
Where is Netherbyres House? Eyemouth, in the Scottish Borders — an hour from Edinburgh, 90 minutes from Newcastle, under two hours from Glasgow. The nearest train station is Berwick-upon-Tweed, with direct trains from Edinburgh and London King's Cross.
Do I have to get in the sea? Absolutely not. Everything is optional. But if you want to give it a go, keep it short, and know that hot coffee is waiting on the other side. Most people who try it say it's the moment they remember most.
Do I need to have done yoga before? No. The sessions are gentle, grounding, and designed to make you feel better — not to perform. Go at your own pace, or skip a session if that's what you need.
Can I come on my own? Yes — lots of people do. You'll be warmly welcomed, and there's a good balance between group time and space to yourself.
With love,
Laura & Nikita x
