When Therapy and Coaching Meet: Reflections from Our Tavira Retreat

There was a moment during our recent retreat in Tavira where Nikita and I looked at each other and quietly acknowledged something we had dreamed about for a long time: this is exactly why we created Blue Spaces Wellbeing retreats.

From the very beginning, our vision was never simply to offer a beautiful escape or a temporary pause from everyday life. We wanted to create a space where people could genuinely reflect, process, heal, and begin thinking about what they wanted to take back into their lives afterwards. A space where meaningful change could begin, gently, safely, and with the right support around them.

That is why combining both therapy and coaching has always been at the heart of what we do.

We have always believed these two modalities complement each other so powerfully. Therapy allows people to explore what may be holding them back, whether that is low self esteem, emotional overwhelm, self doubt, old patterns, or simply the exhaustion that comes from carrying too much for too long. Coaching then creates space to look forward: What do I need now? What do I want my life to feel like? What practical changes can I begin implementing when I return home?

At our Tavira retreat, we saw this process unfold in such a natural and moving way.

Over the course of the retreat, people began opening up, not because they were forced to, but because they felt safe enough to do so. There was something incredibly special about watching guests realise they did not need to hold everything alone. Having skilled professionals on hand to listen, guide, support, and gently challenge where needed created an environment where real honesty could emerge.

What became especially clear was how deeply the therapeutic work supported the coaching process. Once people had space to process difficult emotions or long standing beliefs about themselves, they often felt lighter, clearer, and more ready to think about the future. They were no longer as weighed down by self criticism or emotional noise. From there, conversations about boundaries, relationships, purpose, confidence, and lifestyle changes felt more accessible and more sustainable.

It reminded us that lasting wellbeing is rarely about quick fixes. It is about understanding yourself more deeply, feeling supported while doing so, and then having the tools and encouragement to carry those insights into everyday life.

Of course, the setting itself played a huge role too. Tavira offered the perfect backdrop for this work, calm, grounding, restorative. There is something about being close to the sea, slowing down the pace of life, and stepping away from routine that helps people reconnect with themselves more honestly. The retreat became not just a break away, but a genuine opportunity to reset.

As founders, watching this happen was incredibly meaningful for both of us. Blue Spaces Wellbeing was built from a shared belief that people deserve spaces where emotional wellbeing is treated with care, depth, and compassion, and where support is not one dimensional. Seeing therapy and coaching work together so seamlessly in Portugal felt like watching that belief come to life.

We left Tavira feeling deeply grateful: for the openness of everyone who joined us, for the trust people placed in the process, and for the reminder that when people are given the right environment and support, meaningful change really can begin.

And perhaps most importantly, we were reminded that retreats are not about escaping your life. They are about creating enough space to return to it differently.
