What If You Flipped the “What Ifs”?

If you’ve ever found yourself wide awake at 2am replaying the same questions over and over, you’re not alone.

What if I make the wrong choice?
What if I fail?
What if I regret it later?

Our brains are very good at running worst-case scenarios on repeat. It’s basically the mind’s version of ‘health and safety mode’. Trying to keep you out of danger by imagining everything that could ever go wrong. Helpful if you’re crossing a busy road. Less helpful when you’re thinking about changing jobs, starting something new, or finally booking that holiday or retreat you’ve been dreaming about.

But the thing is, those what ifs aren’t evidence of something disastrous. They’re just your brain’s way of protecting you. And if you flip them, they can turn into something far more useful: possibility.

Starting a new job

How it often goes: what if I’m not good enough? what if they realise I have no idea what I’m doing?

But what if you’re exactly what they need? What if this is the first time you feel truly at ease in your role?

Making a big decision

It often sounds like: what if I choose wrong? what if I ruin everything?

But what if you make the decision that unlocks something you didn’t even know existed?

Moving house or relocating

You might hear: what if I hate it? what if I feel lonely?

But what if you fall in love with the life you create there? What if you find your people?

Relationships

Maybe it’s: what if I regret it? what if I end up alone?

But what if you feel lighter, freer, more yourself? What if this change is the beginning of something better?

Starting a business or going self-employed

The classic: what if I fail? what if I can’t make money?

But what if you succeed on your own terms? What if you finally create work that supports your life, instead of the other way round?

Why it matters

Those anxious what ifs are just your brain’s way of trying to keep you safe. But staying safe and staying stuck often look the same. By flipping the question, you create space for curiosity, growth and change. You shift from fear into possibility, and that’s usually where the breakthroughs happen.

Over to you

So next time your mind starts spiralling, pause and ask yourself: what if this works out better than I imagined?

If you’re feeling stuck in the what ifs, maybe at a career crossroads, unsure whether to take the leap, or maybe even just craving a break to reset, you don’t have to figure it out on your own.
