Holding the Tide: What the Sea Can Teach Us About Hope
There are times when the world feels unusually heavy. We wake to headlines that leave us questioning humanity, scroll through an endless stream of competing opinions, and try to make sense of a society that can often feel fragmented and uncertain. We have access to more information than any generation before us, yet clarity can sometimes feel further away than ever.
It's easy to assume that greater knowledge should naturally lead to greater certainty. Yet the opposite often seems true. The more we understand about ourselves and the world around us, the more aware we become of its complexity. Alongside remarkable scientific discoveries and greater global connection, we also witness misinformation spreading with extraordinary speed. Access to knowledge has expanded our understanding, but it has also revealed just how much remains uncertain.
Rather than seeing this as a sign that something has gone wrong, perhaps it is simply part of what growth looks like. The philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel believed that development often emerges through contradiction. New ways of thinking rarely arrive without discomfort. They tend to grow from the tension that exists when familiar ideas no longer fit and something new is quietly beginning to take shape.
Nature seems to understand this process instinctively. A coastline is never fixed. It is continually shaped by opposing forces: land and sea, ebb and flow, erosion and renewal. What appears to be conflict is often the very process through which landscapes evolve. Given enough time, these forces create places of remarkable beauty and resilience.
Perhaps our inner lives are shaped in much the same way.
Long before modern psychology began exploring uncertainty tolerance and psychological flexibility, the poet Rainer Maria Rilke offered a similar perspective. He wrote, "Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves." His words feel like a gentle reminder that we do not always need immediate answers. Sometimes there is value in allowing uncertainty to exist without rushing to resolve it, trusting that understanding often develops gradually through experience rather than certainty.
Contemporary psychology reflects this idea. Resilience is increasingly understood not as the absence of uncertainty or distress, but as the capacity to remain present with both. Research suggests that our wellbeing is strengthened not by controlling every outcome, but by developing the flexibility to respond to whatever life brings. Psychological flexibility allows us to adapt, to remain connected to what matters most, even when circumstances feel unpredictable.
The sea offers a quiet model of this. Each wave gives way to the next, the tide never clings to the shore, and the landscape is continually reshaped through movement rather than resistance. Nothing remains exactly the same for long, and yet there is a reassuring constancy within that change.
Perhaps this is one reason so many of us are drawn to the coast when life feels overwhelming. Time spent in blue spaces has been shown to support emotional wellbeing, helping to calm the nervous system, restore directed attention and create opportunities for reflection. As we watch the rhythm of the waves, our minds often begin to soften. The need to solve everything eases, making space simply to notice where we are in the present moment.
The historian Howard Zinn once wrote, "If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something." His words were never an invitation to ignore suffering or injustice. Rather, they remind us that despair can become paralysing if it convinces us that nothing we do matters.
Hope, then, may be less about optimism than about participation. A similar sentiment is captured in a quotation in Captain Fantastic: "If you assume that there is no hope, you guarantee that there will be no hope." Hope is not the belief that everything will unfold exactly as we wish. It is the willingness to continue acting with care, compassion and purpose, even when outcomes remain uncertain.
Every act of kindness, every difficult but honest conversation, every moment spent caring for ourselves or someone else, and every walk beside the sea that allows us to return home feeling a little calmer, all become part of that practice. They may seem small in isolation, yet they quietly shape the communities and relationships we live within.
Perhaps this is the deeper lesson offered by both philosophy and nature. Life is rarely defined by simple opposites. Joy and grief often exist alongside one another. Strength and vulnerability frequently coexist. Certainty gives way to curiosity, just as the tide retreats before returning once more. The sea never asks us to conquer uncertainty. Instead, it quietly demonstrates that movement, adaptation and change are not signs of weakness but essential parts of being alive.
Perhaps hope is not something waiting for us somewhere on the horizon after all. Perhaps it grows each time we choose to take the next step, however uncertain the path ahead may feel. That may not guarantee a better future, but it keeps open the possibility that, together, we can help create one.
